In the nearly seven years I’ve lived with gastric bypass surgery I’ve coined some of my own terms and appropriated others. I’ll keep a little rolling glossary here just in case. Mind you, no actual basis in medial terminology is used when I make up these terms, they are my own creations so I can be lazy.
Cut - Anyone with a surgical gastric bypass that requires cutting or stapling of the stomach or intestine. e.g. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (the surgery that I have)
Banded - Anyone with a Lap Band or Realize band that does not require cutting of the stomach or intestine.
The Creep – The unwanted phenomenon where long-term post-ops slowly regain weight potentially without realizing it. Named such because the extra pound just kind of creep up on you.
Former Fatty – Anyone who has lost weight through a weight loss surgery.
Free-Range Fatty - Your garden variety fat person who has never had any type of weight loss surgery.
Future Fatty - Someone with weigh loss surgery who is gaining weight or has gained weight back.
Foaming – When food gets stuck at the top of the stomach and natural juices from your mouth and esophagus won’t go down so they keep coming up into your throat and mouth in the form of “foam.” Really pleasant I swear, lots of spitting involved.
Grazing – Continually eating small amounts of food small enough to fit into your stomach but add up to way more calories that you need. A great way to gain weight with any type of weight loss surgery.
Sticking – When a peice of food gets “stuck” in your esophagus and won’t go down into your stomach. Feels like a baseball is stuck somewhere between your throat and stomach.
Sugared Out – The dumping syndrome type of reaction that occurs from eating too much sugar. Characterized by high body temperature, dizzyness, shaking and a generally bad feeling.
